Hi guys,

As you have probably guessed from my title, the Resident Assistant (RA) application season has officially started!

First, since it is always important to define our terms,  for those who may not know, an RA is essentially a full-time university student who is placed in charge of a dormitory, and consequently is also in charge of all the fellow students who reside in that dormitory!

Secondly, why is it beneficial to become an RA? Well, aside from another line you can add to your resume, many universities provide free housing and dining to Resident Assistants! Considering how expensive room and board is, being an RA would definitely be beneficial to many if not most students!

Thirdly, some restrictions may apply! Many universities place restrictions on the year you can apply. For example, on average many universities allow sophomores, juniors and seniors to apply, while denying freshmen, simply because they are not as familiar with the campus as the older students. Although in some cases, as I believe is the case with Stonybrook State University, freshmen are allowed to apply for RA positions.  In my case, however, at BU only juniors and seniors are allowed to become RAs, but the application process is held sophomore year!

Finally, for those who really want more information about the application process, and recommendations and so forth, I encourage you to click the following link. Although this link is specific to the BU community, it provides actual examples of what an RA Application entails, plus there is a cute funny video too!
