During the month of December 2016, I tried to go ice skating at least once a week. On the ice, was where I found the sense of carelessness yet awareness, and freedom. One day, after an ice skating session, I saw a poster about Speed Skating Club, a club new to Colorado College! I took a photo of the poster and never looked at it again.
It was January 2017! A new semester started! I decided to look through the photos from my camera roll and saw the Speed Skating poster. I finally made time to sit down and email the coach to inform him my interest in speed skating. I got a reply on the same day and started speed skating the next morning at 5:30am.
Sometimes in college, you do not want to do something or go somewhere because your friends are not involved. There have been times where I did not attend something because my friends were not going. However, I realized that this was only a lost on my part. When I do not invest in something because it is dependent on my friend’s investment, I am doing myself a disservice. I have to constantly remind myself that I am here for me. And as selfish as it sounds, an investment in yourself is one of the greatest gift you can give to yourself. Ultimately, it can be a gift you can give to your family, friends, community, and even strangers. So learn how to do new things, and be okay to do them without your friends. You will meet new people, and it is scary, but they may even become your friends!
