irvin-85Hey!

I do not know where winter term went. I have a week and a half left of classes and then I will be taking finals. The pace of this term is incredible but I am glad to say that I feel that I am on top of things and that my hard work is paying off. I have been selected to help a professor in his research in addition to securing an internship in the city of my dreams: Boston! But that is not the point of this blog post: the point of this post is to give you guys a little insight into things that go on in college in addition to the academics.

When you are in college, you realize that you are here with many talented individuals. People are amazing athletes, great painters, talented writers and amazing singers. I want to focus on this last category since it is something that has been getting a lot of attention at Dartmouth. If you watched NBC’s “The Sing-Off”, you might have seen the Dartmouth Aires reach the last 3. It was quite amazing to see people that I had class with on national TV! It just went to show that Dartmouth not only has intelligent students but students that do something else than studying! A lot of people are hard workers but also dedicate their times to activities such as the Dartmouth Aires and other a capella groups as well as student productions. Around this time of the year, there are two very exciting things happening at Dartmouth. First, is the student led performance of “Hairspray”. In this play, I was able to see my classmates perform, not only through acting but using their voices to sing. In addition, the music of the play was provided by a student led orchestra and choir. It is amazing to see how much talent there is.

And speaking about talent, every year Dartmouth holds an event called “Dartmouth Idol” and it is a showcase of the vast range and amount of talent. People who you have never seen sing appear in this event with amazing voices that are worthy of American Idol (I would even argue with better quality).

All of these event make campus vibrant and it provides a relief from the stress that winter term brings. College is not simply about studying. I mean, yes, studying is a significant part of it but there are also other things that you can use your time for. Events like these make you forget for an hour or two about the stress you are under and help you appreciate the people that surround you everyday.
