Despite all the suspense, hopelessness and stress that plagued the earlier half of 2011; the year ended well, granting me admission into one of the nation’s top leading research universities. 2011 gifted me a new life, a new beginning, and a wonderful continuation of my education and search for personal enlightenment. For the first time in my life, I can say that I am TRULY satisfied with my circumstances. Not to say that I wasn’t before, my life wasn’t terrible. It’s just that once one of your major life wishes is fulfilled…you just feel…so happy and so grateful. Heading to the University of Rochester was something I never expected, but it just happened, and it’s one of the best things to ever happen to me in my life.
So what am I aiming for this new year? For one, I want a 4.0 GPA! I earned a 3.8 GPA in my first semester of college, which is pretty good…but not perfect! That B+ could have been an A if I had put in a tad extra bit of effort! I want to get involved in more student clubs. Being cast in a play during my first semester meant that I spent A LOT of time confined in the theater, unable to get involved in other aspects of student life.
Personally, I think that my biggest resolution should be to not forget about my roots, about my old life, my old friends and all of the people who helped get me to where I am today. It’s so easy to get caught up in the present and the future, we forget to remind ourselves that we are where we are not only because of our own efforts, but also those of the people around us, who support us and love us. It can only get better from here…bring it on 2012 =]
With hopes & dreams intact,
Alex Montes.
