I think we’ve all seen the stereotypical media depiction of Spring Break for college students in movies. It’s usually an absolute high and seven-day long party. However, I think one crucial component of Spring Break is often overlooked: rest.
I truly believe one of the best forms of mental health is disconnecting. I am fortunate because I don’t have any classes on Friday, so my Spring Break started a day early and I was able to leave campus before it became busy.
For the first three days of Spring Break I did a phenomenal thing – I didn’t check my emails. It feels phenomenal to not be a student for a few days. I went to a restaurant and I didn’t have to think about getting home to either proofread a paper or practice a presentation. I could just take my time and enjoy things in the moment.
Instead of spending my start of Spring Break in a state of madness, I spent it being in the present. And, this advice is what I can give everyone. Regardless of whether you’re taking an elaborate vacation out of the country or planning to watch all of the new releases that you haven’t gotten to yet – make sure you devote yourself to not spending any energy on work.
Do you often use your breaks to catch up on work or do you actually take a break? Does anyone else have positive stories about disconnecting from responsibilities? What was your favorite memory from Spring Break?
