As a first-generation Latina student that comes from a low-income family that immigrated from Mexico and has never had anyone to look up to as an example, going to college has been challenging. But I keep pushing myself to keep reaching for my goals. To be an example, for those behind me, to the little eyes that watch me each day, to show them there is more to life and to show them they can reach each goal they set for themselves even if they are doing it alone. Respiratory Care is what I chose. However, in my culture, women are not supposed to pursue careers. I chose a different life for myself. That is to work in health care. And I am now paving the way for my family. My advice for first-generation students is not to be afraid to step out and follow their dreams.
