While summer is still ways away, for many, including myself, now is the time to start prepping for it. Summer for a college student holds many possibilities for many different people. I identify three categories from among my peers. The first group of students treats summer like an extra semester, picking up as many summer classes as they can. While this is savvy in getting up credit count, summer classes are usually more expensive and more fast-paced than normal college classes because of the more limited time frame. Alvernia always runs many summer classes, so there’s a lot to choose from if you’re looking. The next group is the students that use summer to get more field practice either through job or internship opportunities. That’s what I’m going for this summer, by contacting my local coroner’s office to sit in on a cadaver. This is a wonderful way to get your foot in the door, and also to further push your drive for the field you are interested in. The last category of students uses summer as a rewarding break from the hustle and grussle of school, which is a wonderful way to recharge both your physical and mental health to prep for the coming school year. No matter what your future goal may be, each option to take could benefit you in different ways. So while summer isn’t as close as we’d all like, planning ahead is never the wrong move!
