When someone mentions the word “College”, most people are typically reminded of two different scenarios. One involves a library, full of studious students eager to be at the top of their class. The second scenario involves a frat house, engulfed with rowdy students and red plastic cups. But does anyone ever think of a Quidditch game? You wouldn’t think so, right? Well, the students in Rochester do. One of the biggest main orientation events was literally a Quidditch game. Now, for those who don’t know what Quidditch is…it’s a fantasy sport derived from the Harry Potter books. It is similar to a mix between soccer/lacrosse/football-except those playing run with…brooms.
You’ll realize something when you get to college, all the things you thought would never happen in school…happen. There’s a Language and Sexuality class, there’s a tanning salon on campus, and there was literally a small fair set up in one of our courtyards a few days ago (ferris wheel included.) When I came here, I did not expect normalcy, but I’ve seen the WEIRDEST things since I’ve been here! And honestly, I LOVE IT!
For me, the most exciting part of this entire experience was knowing that, because of Rochester’s open curriculum, I was FINALLY going to be able to take courses that truly interested me. As of now, I’m taking 17 credits total: 4 from Intro to Public Health, 4 from Intro to Psychology, 4 from Intro to Philosophy, and 5 from a Theater Course. I’m finally learning what I want to learn. I WANT to do the readings, I WANT to go to class, I WANT to go to discussions. Life has changed for the better, and it has only been three weeks since I’ve been here.
Every college experience is different. But I’m absolutely sure that most college students can agree with me when I say this: Your perspectives are challenged. Your relationships are tested. The only thing stopping you from growing at your full potential is yourself. Mom isn’t here to tell me I shouldn’t join the LGBT club. My teachers aren’t telling me to do my homework. You’re alone to make your own choices. You can learn what you want, you can say what you want, and everybody respects it. That’s just how college is. . I can’t wait to tell you all how much better it gets from here! =]
With hopes and dreams intact!
