To me being a first-generation college student is more than just going to college, it’s allowing myself to grow and experience a new world different than anyone before me. However, this journey is hard, really hard. Neither my mother, father, or anyone before me in my family has gone to college. Figuring out how to apply is hard even when you have someone who knows what they are doing, but doing it by yourself is even harder. I was so lost not knowing the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized (there’s google but when you don’t understand that vocabulary it’s no help). My family is one income and I have to pay my rent, tuition, utilities, and everything all on my own. This just accelerates my efforts to find great scholarships and work hard in my classes to let those who are helping me know that their help is not unappreciated.
