Growing up in a low-income family that immigrated from Bangladesh and not having the emotional support to pursue a career that I was passionate about made college extremely difficult. For as long as I could remember, I always had a passion for nursing. However, in the Bengali community, it is common for people to pursue careers in becoming a doctor and engineer, so nursing is often looked down upon. I graduated undergrad with a Public Health degree with the intent to apply to medical programs but realized that was not for me. However, now I am attending an Accelerated Bachelors of Nursing Program. The hardest part about being a first-generation college student is no one close to you can help pave the path for you and you have to figure out things on your own. My advice to first-generation college students is to take advantage of your resources such as college fairs to follow your passions.
