EVERY corner is different and you must inquire it.
College is all about what you make of it, and I plan to make a lot of it. I’ve been told that I am taking it too serious, but I think coming from such an ambitious place, as it is New York City, I don’t think I am.
As you may imagine, yes, my schedule fills up pretty quickly, and the best relationship I have right now is with my agenda. The agenda or daily planner is the first thing I fish out of my backpack before heading out of my dorm, and throughout the day I cross this and that. Trust me, it would make your life easier if you just have a planner.
What you should always do when you jot down something in your planner, or if you have it on your phone, is the following. First, remember to write the event’s information, such as the time and the location. There are times we rely too much on our minds, so please make things easier for your brain and write the location—your mind has enough with memorizing formulas, definitions, and symbols. The importance of writing down this information is that, I can assure you, you will forget a crucial detail about the event. Like the location for instance? There have been times wherein I have neglected to write down all the information and it is a riddle to decipher just in a matter of minutes, prior to event starting, which direction I should take.
For an unexplained reason, in my mind the word “event” connects to the word “club.” During the last blog post, I shared with you a little about club hunting. Well, that sort of has calmed down a little… um, maybe not. Although there are roughly 250 clubs at Brandeis, let me just say that the majority of clubs I’ve joined have not gone beyond the first meeting thus far. Nonetheless, I can see how we are getting set to start this race. Actually, on Friday, Sept. 25th everyone from the e-board of a literary magazine, called Jaded, are having dinner out in Boston, and that of course includes this writer here. I believe we are discussing upcoming future projects of the magazine, but we are also just having some leisure time for ourselves. We are jumping on the opportunity to meet one another better—after all we are working together to put up a magazine throughout the entire year.
The clubs I’ve joined stimulate certain interest of my being. The magazine and the newspaper stimulate my creativity and my passion for literature. The LGBT club allows me to stimulate my subversive spirit to advocate for those who have no voice—by the way, I will be running for first-year representative very soon, so looking forward to that too. The Waltham Group, which does all different kinds of community service, stimulates my sense of giving back to my community. And the Brandeis Immigration Education initiative, which advocates for student education rights, across the nation, to have access to higher education. The club stimulates my activist heart and reminds me of my past, because the past is still very much part of me.
When you have to fit all these sort of activities, classes, and much more it can be a swirling headache. For the sake of your health, try to do what passionate you, don’t do it because you feel you have to. Have goals about what you want to get out of each club and class. Do you want to be in this club because you want to learn a new skill, network, work towards one common cause, or simply attempt to make a change whether big or small, etc. Don’t overload yourself with clubs and activities. Remember it is good to have a balance and academics will demand a big chunk of your time. But in the end, it is college so try not to kill yourself, but also try to have as much fun as possible.
The other day, it was two in the morning, and I was completely “toasted,” that is how one of my friends described my state. I had been writing a paper for an entire day, and I just had to go to bed. I took two Excedrin pills, since I had a headache, and went to bed. I didn’t prioritize what I ought and was expected to do first and that happened. There have been weeks when the average hours of sleep have been five hours, so I will bother to repeat it again. Go to bed early, try to do everything you need to do throughout the day, eat healthy, and stay hydrated my friends.
